Birthday dinner

Since my actual birthday falls on a Tues (today) this year, I am having my dinner on Friday instead so that people can go and see Bear and his wonderful new show. The actual details will follow. Please comment here if you are interested.

Happy birthday! Unfortunately I have a prior commitment on Friday. :-( I hope you have a great birthday dinner, though!

Are you going to be at Bear's show? This will be the first time I've seen him.

Happy Birthday!

Any hints for gifties you would like?

Not really. I do not like the whole concept of _having_ to get somebody something. I really appreciate gifts when the person thinks of me and says "I'll bet Jim would love this" The day it's given isn't so important.

In reference to an email I sent you for info on bonding flat steel to a busk...
I attempted to drill holes in the spring steel to no avail! It's rather resilient, and ended up bending much. I opted to cut U shaped notches with my Dremel's cut-off wheel, painting the edges with Plasti Dip, and taping the two together with electrical tape. I have a dead-line with this corset, so any experimentation with welding and bonding will have to wait. Although the busk is stronger now, I found that if I had left the seam allowance wider, and placed the flat boning behind that, it seemed to be stronger than the "sandwiching flush" technique. In doing that, there would also be no worries of the nubs scratching the surface of the bone.
Just thought I'd share my results...

Re: drive-by-post
Drilling into hardened steel takes cobalt bits and a jig that can hold the steel flat. I would have made a clamp out of mild steel with the holes already drilled into it. After the bone was inserted into the clamp the bit would be fed through the pilot hole, through the bone and then through the back pilot hole. That will keep the bit from walking.

Placing a bone beside will make the busk more resistant to twisting but not much more resistant to fore/aft bending. That is determined by the thickness only.

I'd be interested if I didn't already have rather elaborate existing plans for Friday. But I do hope those plans will be yours after dinner. :)

Happy Birthday!

I would love to celebrate your day-of-birth, Bestest Dish I Ever Made For The BiCamp Potluck. I have no idea if I'll be feeling well enough by Friday to travel into the Northlands of Boston, though. :/

I'd like to try to make it, depending on what time dinner is since I will be coming from work.

We'll be at the Enormous Room in Central Sq. starting at 7pm. There is no reservations or seating so you can drop in when you get there. See you on Friday!
